Wednesday 30 April

Wednesday 30th April 2014

We had a nice run down to Gatwick on Sunday with Rachel and Simon, no hold ups and made really good time only to arrive and find the plane had been delayed by 2 hours so a bit of a long wait at the airport.
Flight was noisy as lots of people knew each other and were swapping seats or standing in the aisles chatting to each other, even the flight attendants commented on the god nature of the passengers.

The trip from the airport to Vounaki took about 50 minutes and we eventually arrived at our apartment at midnight and promptly dropped the bags and went for a nice buffet dinner!

Monday was a bit overcast but Viv and I had a chance to go out in a Wayfarer for a sail coming in as the wind picked up just before it poured with rain. Later on I went out for a blast on my own in Hobby catamaran and a short go on a paddle board. I also won a place on the raffle for the use of a 33 foot yacht for the day on Saturday at no cost.

Tuesday was another iffy sort of day with the odd shower. I sailed a Super Nova that I got surfing down the waves at one point but found it very slippery and was constantly worried I would slide out of the boat. Sam Samuels and I had a really good blast on the Hobby Cat, I helmed and he was on the trapeze wire although he lost his footing  when waves hit a few times and ended up surfing of the back of the boat attached to the trapeze wire. We laughed and hollered like two small kids and came off with grins around past our ears.
Viv  forgoed the sailing and decided to walk into the nearest town with Rachel and Sue and Alan Parry and managed to avoid the showers, a worthwhile trip as she came back with a litre and a half of local red wine.
I also had a sail in a wayfarer with a chap called Dennis who is blind but a great crew, it was really windy and we had a good blast but split two spinnakers surfing down the waves, after splitting the second one we decided to call it a day and stop for lunch.

In the evening we had a race between eight 33 metre yachts, Sam helmed our yacht which came in a very convincing first much to the delight of the crew, the beer tasted particularly good.

Wednesday we joined up with Ray and Jill Scraggs and sailed across the bay with 10 other Wayfarers for a picnic. The weather forecast had been poor but fortunately it was wrong and we had a nice hot sunny day so much so we were able to go swimming at lunchtime.

I found a beautiful Bee Orchid growing just behind the beach in some scrub land.

Once we got back I went out on the Hobby Cat again for a blast but whilst waiting to go out was entertained by two Dolphins swimming just off shore one large and one smaller a short distance behind.
