Sunday 1st June
Big sail today as we were intending to go from Vathi on Ithica back to Paleros on the Greek mainland a distance of 28 miles which we reckoned would take us about 9 hours, so setting off just after 9:00 am we should arrive around 6:00 pm. The wind was right for a nice reach all the way across with winds from Force 1 to Force 4 during the day.
When the wind picked up it really pushed the boat along causing her to heel but respond really well.
We had to alter course at one point and tack off when a Car Ferry can steaming down from Vasliki towards Patras.
Sam got confined to the dinghy for a while for being anti-social!!
Actually the real reason was we were trying to check how accurate the compass was on the boat, so he went in the dinghy behind whilst I steered due north, once he was out of range of all the iron on the boat like engine and anchor we could see what effect it was having. The old compass on the boat was over reading by 10 degrees and the new one by 20 degrees so good job we checked.
Afternoon tea and biscuits.
Not long after this photo we saw a small motor boat approaching and they hailed us to stop. It turned out to be a couple of Romainians who had hired a little boat in Nidri and had sailed outside the area of their map. They couldn't work out where they were which was not surprising as they were about 10 miles off their map. We explained where they were and set them off in the right direction, amazing people can just get in a boat and go to sea and get so lost.
This is Sam waving to Eddie the chap he bought the boat off on the balcony of his house as we sailed back into Paleros.
We were both dead chuffed as we had estimated it would take about 9 hours to get there and we arrived at 6:15 pm 15 minutes later than estimated after 28 miles at sea, not bad!
We celebrated with a pint of Methos beer each.
